Wiltshire Sight ask people to make volunteering their New Year’s resolution!

Instead of a traditional New Year resolution, such as giving up chocolate or trying to get fit, local sight loss charity Wiltshire Sight is asking people to make a New Year’s resolution with a difference – by becoming a volunteer.

Whilst resolutions such as joining a gym can be an added expense on top of Christmas, volunteering is a great way to be active without spending any money.

Wiltshire Sight has a wide variety of volunteering roles to fill from becoming a charity trustee to helping with activities, office work, project and design work and event helpers.

Leanne Hubbard, Chief Executive at Wiltshire Sight said: “Volunteering is a great way to gain new skills and if you are ultimately looking for a new job volunteering speaks volumes to potential new employers – the fact that you are self-motivated enough to help others.

“Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people, whether these are the people you are helping or your fellow volunteers. Also knowing that you are doing something to help those in need will inevitably bring you satisfaction.”

Although the charity is based in Devizes, many of its volunteering roles are based throughout the county. The commitment can vary to suit the individual – some of volunteers give half an hour a month, whereas others may help several times a week.

The charity will be hosting a volunteer recruitment event on Wednesday, 28 January 2015 at its premises in Devizes from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 7pm so anyone who is interested in finding out about volunteering with Wiltshire Sight can come along and find out more.

Date: Wednesday 28 January

Time: 10am-2pm & 5pm-7pm

Venue: St Lucy’s Sight Centre, Browfort, Bath Road, Devizes SN10 2AT

Karen Monk has been volunteering with the charity for almost 12 months as a community fundraising volunteer. Karen said: “I started volunteering with Wiltshire Sight to give me some new skills and meet new people. I started off placing charity collection boxes in local stores and now I am organising community fundraising events and activities. I’m even taking a course in Leadership and Management with the charity. It’s a great team and I’ve learnt so much.”
